AB  - In last decades, bacterial resistance to first choice
antibiotics has been drastically increasing, therefore,
the research of new antimicrobial substances
is of great importance. This rising problem
with bacterial resistance to existing antibiotics
affects not only the health care institutes but also
food plants. S. aureus and S. enteritidis pose a
number of challenges to the food industry and
cause foodborne illness in humans. In addition,
due to their favourable elemental composition,
oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus sp.) are a reservoir
of bioactive compounds that give them remarkable
antibacterial potential. P. ostreatus is of
great economic importance and is the second
most cultivated edible mushroom, therefore information
about its possible targets on bacterial
cells is of great importance for use as a dietary
supplement or medicinal purposes. The results of
the antibacterial assay showed that tested bacterial
strains were susceptible to the methanol extract of P. ostreatus (PoME), while microbicidal
activity was only detected against Gram-positive
bacteria. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
micrographs suggested that extract acted on
cytoplasmic membrane of S. aureus, while the
cell envelope of S. Enteritidis was the most likely
target. Natural extracts may outperform individual
bioactive compounds due to the synergistic
interaction between the metabolites, which can
enhance the effects of the individual components.
Extracts rich in antibacterials are emerging
as alternatives to synthetic antibiotics in the food
and health sectors. Among these, crude mushroom
extracts are particularly sought after for
their diverse bioactive ingredients, as they can
combat resistant strains of bacteria due to their
different targets and modes of action. PoME can
be used as an effective antimicrobial agent, suitable
for applications aiming to eradicate foodborne
pathogens, thus enhancing food safety.

AB  - During the past decades several quorum sensing
inhibitors (QSI) of plant origin have been isolated
and chemically characterized. QSI agents
of plant origin represent potential alternative
or complementary approach to antibiotic treatment
of multidrug-resistant bacteria and infections
caused by bacterial biofilms. The aim of
the current study was to screen QSI activities
of horseradish root extracts obtained using
different organic solvents and different root
processing methods (drying at 40°C, 60°C or extraction
of fresh material). Common opportunistic
pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa MMA83
was used for QSI screen. RT-qPCR was used to
analyze the effect of the extract on the relative
mRNA levels of the genes QS (lasR, lasI, rhlR, rhlI,
mvfR, pqsH) and the genes involved in P. aeruginosa
MMA83 virulence (lasB, phzM, rhlC, algK,
pvdS). Chemical composition of extracts was
determined by UHPLC Q-ToF MS analysis. The
most active extract obtained using fresh roots
and hexane/ethyl acetate (1:1) solvent mixture
was able to significantly reduce content all examined
mRNA. Qualitative chemical analysis
reviled presence of 15 phenolic acids and their
derivatives, 9 flavonoids and 10 glucosinolates
in majority of examined extracts. It is significant
to emphasize that the most active QSI extract
did not contain a single one, out of ten dominant
glucosinolates, which have undergone to
hydrolysis yielding isothiocyanates and other
sulphur-containing compounds responsible for
QSI effects. Our results strongly indicate that
even mild thermal treatment (40°C) of horseradish
roots prior to extraction could lead to severe
reduction or loss of QSI activity.

AB  - Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been recognized as
a priority pathogen by World Health Organization,
due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant
(MDR) strains. Thus, new treatment options
such as antivirulence strategy is urgently needed.
This strategy is based on the disruption of quorum
sensing (QS) activity of this pathogen. The
focus of this research was to explore the anti-QS
activity of four selected medicinal mushrooms
(Lentinula edodes, Cantharellus cibarius, Trametes
versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus) extracts on
MDR clinical isolate P. aeruginosa MMA83. Another
aim was to check their cytotoxicity on Caenorhabditis
elegans AU37 (glp-4(bn2) I; sec-1(km4).
Among three types of mushroom extracts - hot
water polysaccharide extracts (WPE), hot alkali
polysaccharide extracts (APE) and methanol
extracts (Met), APE extracts downregulated all
tested QS and virulence factors genes of P. aeruginosa
MMA83. The most prominent effect was
observed for C. cibarius APE extract, lowering
expression from 2-fold (for lasI gene) to 20-fold
for lasB gene. Extracts didn’t show cytotoxic effect
on C. elegans. The efficacy of APE extracts
in lowering the expression of QS and virulence
factors genes of P. aeruginosa MMA83 indicate
that these extracts can reduce pathogenicity of
P. aeruginosa. Also, they possess one of the desirable
biotechnology features – the absence of
cytotoxicity. Anti-QS and antivirulence effect of
APE extracts on P. aeruginosa envisages these extracts
as the promising therapeutic candidates
for the development of next-generation antivirulence
agents.

AB  - Thermal springs represent a habitat with extreme conditions that harbor a unique
microbial community adapted to thrive in this environment. In addition to the geothermal
springs in Iceland, the thermal springs of Vranjska Banja are considered the hottest in
Europe with a water temperature of 63-95°C. Due to global warming and climate change,
there is a growing need for knowledge about the biodiversity of extreme natural habitats.
Besides the exceptional importance of studying extremophilic microorganisms, the
difficulty in their cultivation limits the expanding necessity of research in this field. This
study provides information about the microbial community structure and physicochemical
characteristics of the thermal spring of Vranjska Banja. To determine and monitor the
microbiota diversity of the Vranjska Banja hot spring, for the first time, comprehensive
culture-independent metagenomic analysis in parallel with a culture-dependent
approach was applied. The culture-independent composition of bacterial communities of
the thermal water was investigated using MiSeq-Illumina technology and analyzed by
the computing environment QIIME2 v2021. The applied cultivation approach resulted
in the isolation of 17 strains belonging to genera Bacillus, Anoxybacillus, Hydrogenophilus,
and Geobacillus, based on 16S rRNA sequencing and whole genome sequencing of five
representative strains has been performed. The complete DNA was sequenced using
Illumina HiSeq from the MicrobesNG service. Genomic characterization and OrthoANI
analysis have shown that two of them are candidates for novel species. Products of
extremophilic microorganisms adapted to harsh conditions have great potential to be
used for biotechnological research and industrial application. Results of BAGEL4 and
AntiSMASH showed that the sequenced strains from Vranjska Banja hot spring have
the potential to produce thermostable enzymes (proteases, lipases, amylases, phytase,
chitinase, and glucanase) and various antimicrobial molecules.

Europe with a water temperature of 63-95°C. Due to global warming and climate change,
there is a growing need for knowledge about the biodiversity of extreme natural habitats.
Besides the exceptional importance of studying extremophilic microorganisms, the
difficulty in their cultivation limits the expanding necessity of research in this field. This
study provides information about the microbial community structure and physicochemical
characteristics of the thermal spring of Vranjska Banja. To determine and monitor the
microbiota diversity of the Vranjska Banja hot spring, for the first time, comprehensive
culture-independent metagenomic analysis in parallel with a culture-dependent
approach was applied. The culture-independent composition of bacterial communities of
the thermal water was investigated using MiSeq-Illumina technology and analyzed by
the computing environment QIIME2 v2021. The applied cultivation approach resulted
in the isolation of 17 strains belonging to genera Bacillus, Anoxybacillus, Hydrogenophilus,
and Geobacillus, based on 16S rRNA sequencing and whole genome sequencing of five
representative strains has been performed. The complete DNA was sequenced using
Illumina HiSeq from the MicrobesNG service. Genomic characterization and OrthoANI
analysis have shown that two of them are candidates for novel species. Products of
extremophilic microorganisms adapted to harsh conditions have great potential to be
used for biotechnological research and industrial application. Results of BAGEL4 and
AntiSMASH showed that the sequenced strains from Vranjska Banja hot spring have
the potential to produce thermostable enzymes (proteases, lipases, amylases, phytase,
chitinase, and glucanase) and various antimicrobial molecules.",

In the recent years, considerable attention has been given to selenium status since its deficiency is linked with various disorders and affects at least 13 % of world population. Additionally, mushrooms are known to possess pronounced capacity for absorption of various micronutrients, including Se, from soil/substrate. Here, we investigate the possibility of using Se-rich zeolitic tuff as a supplement for production of selenized mushroom. Furthermore, the impact of the enrichment on the activity of antioxidant enzymes and biological potential of Coriolus versicolor medicinal mushroom is studied. Experimental approach. Se(IV)- and Se(VI)-modified natural zeolitic tuff from the Serbian deposit Zlatokop was used as supplement for mushroom cultivation. To examine the effectiveness of selenium enrichment, we determined total selenium with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), together with the activity of antioxidant enzymes in fresh fruiting bodies and biological potential of methanolic extracts. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the appropriate tests for: inhibition of lipid peroxidation, DPPH free radical scavenging assay, Fe(III)-reducing antioxidant power assay and ability of chelating Fe2+ ions. The antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens was measured by broth microdilution assay. Additionally, chemical composition of the prepared extracts was studied using UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Results and conclusions. Content of selenium detected in biofortified C. versicolor was even 470 times higher than in control on dry mass basis ((140.7 +/- 3.8) vs (0.3 +/- 0.1) mu g/g), proving that Se-rich zeolitic tuff is an excellent supplement for mushroom production. Furthermore, the results of monitoring the activity of antioxidant enzymes revealed that most of the Se-enriched mushrooms exhibited higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) and cata lase (CAT) and lower glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities than control. Due to higher amounts of enzymes, which can quickly catalyze the reduction of superoxide radicals, the quality of selenium-enriched mushrooms is preserved for a longer period of time. Investigation of biological potential indicated that Se-enriched mushroom methanolic extracts, generally, expressed enhanced antioxidant properties. Additionally, extracts showed antibacterial activity against all tested pathogenic microorganisms. Novelty and scientific contribution. Cultivation of mushrooms on Se-enriched zeolitic tuff is a new technological approach for obtaining Se-fortified food/supplements with enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial activities.

AB  - The addition of heteroatoms to pristine carbon quantum dots (CQDs) change their structure and optical properties. In this study, fluorine (F)- and chlorine (Cl)-doped CQDs are prepared by the one-step green hydrothermal route from sodium fluoride, sodium chloride, urea, and citric acid as the starting precursors. Microscopy analysis reveals that the average size of these quantum dots is 5 +/- 2 nm, whereas the chemical study shows the existence of C-F and C-Cl bonds. The produced F- and Cl-doped CQDs have fluorescence quantum yields of 0.151 and 0.284, respectively, at an excitation wavelength of 450 nm. Charge transfer resistance of F- and Cl-doped CQDs films is 2 orders of magnitude higher than in the pristine CQD films. Transport band gap of the doped CQDs is 2 eV bigger than that of pristine CQDs. Radical scavenging activity shows very good antioxidant activity of doped CQDs. Antibacterial testing reveals poor antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The F- and Cl-doped CQDs are successfully used as fluorescent probes for cell imaging as shown by confocal microscopy.

In this study, fluorine (F)- and chlorine (Cl)-doped CQDs are prepared by the one-step green hydrothermal route from sodium fluoride, sodium chloride, urea, and citric acid as the starting precursors. Microscopy analysis reveals that the average size of these quantum dots is 5 +/- 2 nm, whereas the chemical study shows the existence of C-F and C-Cl bonds. The produced F- and Cl-doped CQDs have fluorescence quantum yields of 0.151 and 0.284, respectively, at an excitation wavelength of 450 nm. Charge transfer resistance of F- and Cl-doped CQDs films is 2 orders of magnitude higher than in the pristine CQD films. Transport band gap of the doped CQDs is 2 eV bigger than that of pristine CQDs. Radical scavenging activity shows very good antioxidant activity of doped CQDs. Antibacterial testing reveals poor antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The F- and Cl-doped CQDs are successfully used as fluorescent probes for cell imaging as shown by confocal microscopy.",

AB  - Kombucha is a nonalcoholic beverage traditionally made by fermenting black tea using a combination of yeast and acetic acid bacteria (AAB) cultures. During the 11-day fermentation, pH, total acidity, and the numbers of yeasts and AAB were monitored. It was found that sweetened G. lucidum HWE was a good medium for yeast and AAB growth. The desired acidity for the beverage was reached on the second day (3 g/L) of the fermentation process; the maximum established acidity was 22.8 +/- 0.42 g/L. Fourier transform infrared analysis revealed that the vacuum-dried beverage is a mixture of various compounds such as polysaccharides, phenols, proteins, and lipids. Total phenolic content of the liquid sample was 4.91 +/- 0.2338 mg gallic acid equivalents/g, whereas the vacuum-dried sample had a smaller amount of phenolics (2.107 +/- 0.228 mg gallic acid equivalents/g). Established half-maximal effective concentrations for DPPH scavenging activity and reducing power were 22.8 +/- 0.17 and 10.61 +/- 0.34 mg/mL, respectively. The antibacterial testing revealed that activity does not originate solely from synthesized acetic acid. The liquid G. lucidum beverage was the most effective against the tested bacteria, with the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (0.04 mg/ml,) against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Rhodococcus equi, and a minimum bactericidal concentration (0.16 mg/mL) against Bacillus spizizenii, B. cereus, and R. equi. The vacuum-dried sample was less effective, with the lowest minimum bactericidal concentration against the Gram-positive bacteria R. equi (1.875 mg/mL) and against the Gram-negative bacteria Proteus hauseri (30 mg/mL).

AB  - Electrochemically exfoliated graphene is functionalized graphene with potential application in biomedicine. Two most relevant biological features of this material are its electrical conductivity and excellent water dispersibility. In this study we have tried to establish the correlation between graphene structure and its antibacterial properties. The exfoliation process was performed in a two electrode-highly oriented pyrolytic graphite electrochemical cell. Solution of ammonium persulfate was used as an electrolyte. Exfoliated graphene sheets were dispersed in aqueous media and characterized by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, zeta potential, contact angle measurements and surface energy. Antibacterial assays have shown lack of the significant antibacterial activity. Major effect on bacteria was slight change of bacteria morphology. Membrane remained intact despite significant change of chemical content of membrane components.

AB  - Poslednjih nekoliko decenija sve veća pažnja se posvećuje nutritivnim i medicinskim svojstvima gljiva. Gljive mogu transformisati biljne lignocelulozne ostatke niske hranljive vrednosti u visoko vredne delikatesne namirnice. Dokazano je i da mogu usvojiti selen, iz supstrata na kojem rastu, i da ta sposobnost zavisi od vrste gljive, kao i od oblika i koncentracije dodatog selena. Selen je esencijalni mikronutrijent, neophodan za normalno funkcionisanje organizma. Istraživanja o zastupljenosti ovog elementa ukazuju da zemljište Srbije, kao i životne namirnice spadaju među selenom najsiromašnije u svetu. Sa druge strane, Srbija raspolaže značajnim količinama zeolita i procenjuje se da se najveće zalihe ovog minerala u Evropi nalaze u blizini Vranjske Banje. Zeolitski tuf može biti modifikovan i potom upotrebljen kao adsorbent selenit- i selenat-jona. Uticaj Se(IV)- i Se(VI)-modifikovanog zeolita (SeIV-CLI i SeVI-CLI) na aktivnost enzima antioksidativnog sistema zaštite praćen je u svežim plodonosnim telima gljiva Pleurotus ostreatus i Coriolus versicolor. Jača aktivnost enzima superoksid-dismutaze i glutation-peroksidaze je utvrđena u svim uzorcima gljive P. ostreatus odgajenim na supstratu sa dodatkom selena u odnosu na kontrolu. Kod većine uzoraka gljive C. versicolor, obogaćene selenom, ustanovljena je jača aktivnost enzima superoksid-dismutaze i katalaze i slabija aktivnost glutation-peroksidaze u poređenju sa kontrolom. Primenom SDS-PAGE gel elektroforeze utvrđeno je da selen prisutan u uzorcima nije uticao na promenu molekulskih masa ispitivanih gljiva. U ovoj disertaciji izolovani su metanolni ekstrakti gljiva P. ostreatus i C. versicolor, odgajenih na supstratu bez i sa dodatkom različitih koncentracija selena u vidu Se(IV)- i Se(VI)-modifikovanog zeolita. AB  - In recent decades, more attention is paid to the nutritional and medicinal properties of fungi. Fungi can transform lignocellulosic residues of plants with low nutritional value into high-value delicious food. It has been shown that fungi can absorb selenium from the growing substrate and that this ability depends on the type of fungus and concentration of the added selenium. Selenium is an essential micronutient, necessary for the proper functioning of the organism. Research on the distribution of this element indicates that land in Serbia, and foodstuffs are among the poorest in the world. On the other hand, Serbia has significant quantities of zeolite and it is estimated that the largest reserves of this mineral in Europe are located near Vranjska Banja. The zeolitic tuff can be modified and then used as an adsorbent for selenite- and selenate- ions. The influence of Se(IV)- and Se(VI)- modified zeolite (SeVI-CLI and SeVI-CLI) on the enzyme activity of the antioxidant protection system was monitored in fresh fruiting bodies of the fungi P. ostreatus and C. versicolor. Increased activity of the superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes was measured in all samples of P. ostreatus grown on the substrate with the addition of selenium compared to the control samples. Most samples of C. versicolor enriched with selenium showed increased activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase enzymes and weaker activity of glutathione peroxidase compared to the control. By applying SDS-PAGE gel electrophoresis it was found that selenium present in the samples did not affect the molecular weight change of the tested fungi. AB  - New bioactive and antimicrobial biomaterials were produced by alginate-mediated biomineralization with Zn-mineral phase. The synthesis procedure is simple, cost-effective and resulted in. two different Zn-mineralized alginate nanocomposites, Zn-carbonate/Zn-alginate and Zn-phosphate/Zn-alginate. The presence of Zn-mineral phase and its type, have significantly affected nanocomposite morphology, stability, total metallic loading and potential to release Zn(II) in physiological environment. Antimicrobial experiments showed that both types of Zn-mineralized nanocomposites exhibit strong antimicrobial effect against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. These results suggest that alginate biomineralization, where minerals are salts of essential metallic ions like Zn(II), represents a'good strategy for designing multifunctional biomaterials for potential biomedical applications.

AB  - Two types of zeolites-natural clinoptilolite (NZ) and synthetic zeolite A (A)-were enriched with approx. 0.25 mmol of Cu(II), Zn(II), or Ag(I) ions, and the obtained materials (M-Z) were tested against three different isolates of Escherichia coli. Two isolates were environmental isolates from waters in Serbia whereas the third one was DSM 498. Antibacterial activity was studied in different water media-nutrient-rich media (peptone water), water from Sava Lake, and commercially available spring water. The Ag-containing zeolites showed bactericidal activity in the nutrient-rich peptone water after 1 h of contact. Cu- and Zn-containing zeolites showed bactericidal activity in real water samples. Antibacterial activity of the M-Z decreases in all three examined water media in the following order: Ag-NZ ae Ag-A  gt  Cu-NZ ae Cu-A  gt  Zn-NZ  gt  gt  gt  Zn-A, suggesting that mainly the metal type and not the zeolite type have a role in the antibacterial activity. Leaching experiments showed small amounts of the leached Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions, indicating that the antibacterial activity is not due to the metal ions but should be attributed to the M-Z itself. However, leached amounts of Ag(I) from Ag-NZ and Ag-A in peptone water indicate that the released Ag(I) could be mainly responsible for the bactericidal effect of the Ag(I)-containing zeolites. Since no loss of cellular material was found, the antibacterial activity is not attributed to cytoplasmic membrane damage.

AB  - The antibacterial activity of methanol extract obtained from fruiting body of industrially grown basidiomycete Coriolus versicolor was examined. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values against various bacteria ranged from 0.625 to 20 mg mL(-1). versicolor expressed bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The growth curves of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis, measured at 630 nm, and confirmed with macrodilution method showed that the obtained extract could inhibit the growth of tested bacteria. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the loss of 260-nm-absorbing material were used to examine the ultrastructural changes in bacteria induced by the extract. When S. aureus was exposed to the MIC of C. versicolor, elongated and malformed cells were observed by SEM, while S. Enteritidis treated cells appeared shorter and aggregated with ruptured cell walls. TEM revealed the formation of non-membrane-enclosed bodies and depleted inner content of S. aureus. Larger and irregular periplasmic space and deformed and scattered components of the cell envelope were observed in treated S. Enteritidis. The loss of 260-nm-absorbing material indicated that the disruptive action of the extract on cytoplasmic membrane was more pronounced in S. aureus than in S. Enteritidis treated cells. The UV and FTIR spectrophotometric analyses revealed diverse composition of C. versicolor extract and high content of total phenolics. Altogether, mushroom extracts could be used to develop nutraceuticals or drugs effective against pathogenic microorganisms.

AB  - Bioactive compounds obtained from Coriolus versicolor (Trametes versicolor (L: Fr) Lloyd, 1920.) mushrooms cultivated in a stirred-tank bioreactor were tested to determine their antimicrobial potential. Extracellular polysaccharides were isolated from the fermentation broth by ethanol precipitation. A methanol extract was prepared from mycelium. The cultivation conditions applied during the fermentation process provided for significant biomass 6.63 +/- 0.31 g dry weight L-1 and yield of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) (0.74 +/- 0.12 g L-1). Microscopic analyses revealed that the mycelium grew predominately in the form of fluffy pellets. The methanol extract demonstrated very good activity against all the tested Gram-positive bacteria. Bacillus spizizeni and Staphylococcus epidermidis were the most sensitive strains (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)  lt 0.3125 mg mL(-1)). Among the Gram-negative bacteria, Yersinia enterocolitica had the lowest MIC value, 5 mg mL(-1). Microbicidal activity of mycelia methanol extract was established in seven out of ten tested Gram-negative bacteria strains with minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values ranged from 20 to 40 mg mL(-1). Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus showed higher sensitivity to the extracellular polysaccharides (MIC values 2.5 mg mL(-1)). FTIR analysis revealed a more complex chemical composition of the methanol extract compared to EPS, which might explain the better antibacterial activity of the methanol extract. Our results suggested that the submerged cultivation of Coriolus versicolor followed by ethanol precipitation of EPS and the methanol extraction of mycelia can be a promising process to obtain biological active compounds with significant antimicrobial activity. Industrial Relevance: Mushrooms contain a large number of chemicals with potential use as antimicrobial compounds. One of the biggest challenges for providing biologically active compounds from mushrooms is short-term process standardization with a low risk for contamination. Submerged culture cultivation is the best choice for providing antimicrobial compounds from mushrooms. The submerged culture method represents an effective and energy-efficient means to produce novel antibacterial compound from mushrooms. Antibacterial activity testing revealed that methanol extract and isolated exopolysaccharides exhibited strong antibacterial activity, especially against Gram-positive bacteria.

AB  - Se(IV) and Se(VI) anions are the dominant species of Se existing in aqueous systems. In this study, the iron(III)-modified natural zeolitic tuff (Fe-CLI) from the Serbian deposit Zlatokop has been investigated as an adsorbent for the Se oxyanions. Fe-CLI shows adsorption activity for both Se(IV) and Se(VI) which decreases with increasing pH. The adsorption capacity of Fe-CLI is found to be higher for Se(IV) than for Se(VI). Kinetics data follow the pseudo-second-order model and the obtained parameters k indicate that the rates of adsorption and desorption are higher for Se(VI). Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analyses reveal that Se is bound at the zeolite surface forming not only the Se-O-Fe but also Se-O-Si bonds. The adsorption mechanism depends of the type of oxo ions. Samples of zeolitic tuff which contain Se were tested as soil supplements for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms. The fungus adsorbed the inorganic Se from zeolitic tuff transforming it to a more valuable organically bound form.

abstract = "Se(IV) and Se(VI) anions are the dominant species of Se existing in aqueous systems. In this study, the iron(III)-modified natural zeolitic tuff (Fe-CLI) from the Serbian deposit Zlatokop has been investigated as an adsorbent for the Se oxyanions. Fe-CLI shows adsorption activity for both Se(IV) and Se(VI) which decreases with increasing pH. The adsorption capacity of Fe-CLI is found to be higher for Se(IV) than for Se(VI). Kinetics data follow the pseudo-second-order model and the obtained parameters k indicate that the rates of adsorption and desorption are higher for Se(VI). AB  - The activity of organic selenium against pathogenic molds and its use as a potential selenium source in the production of enriched mushrooms were examined. The effect of commercial selenized yeast on mycelia growth was examined using a method with mycelia disks and a well diffusion method. For mushroom enrichment, different concentrations of selenium were added to a growth substrate. The results presented in this paper suggest that the most suitable concentration of selenized yeast that inhibits the growth of the mycopathogenic molds is 70-100 mg/kg of selenium. With the addition of this concentration to the substrate, mushroom fruit bodies will uptake a high level of selenium, about 100 mu g/g for Pleurotus spp., and 200 mu/g for Agaricus bisporus in dry weight of the mushroom. Thereby a double effect in the cultivation of mushrooms is achieved.
